Blackle is now back in action. We had some server issues to do with the sudden jump in visitors that we recieved recently. As a result our server had to be taken off line, but we are now back and we have taken measures to prevent this from happening again.
Thanks all of you for your support and patience. Remeber to set Blackle as your home page so you are reminded of the need to take small measures to save energy each time you go online.
Hello,

Hi Robin,
Thanks for the question. Blackle is not affiliated with Google except that it makes use of the Google Coop system to power the searches. We are very appreciative to Google for making Coop available otherwise we would not have been able to make Blackle.
Thanks for the kind words,
Toby
Toby:
Are you aware that LCDs actually use MORE energy to view black on their display? Your website only helps save energy for CRT users (about a quarter of all the computers).
Perhaps this should be stated on the site?
Best,
Heather
Hi Heather,
Thank you for your comment and sorry for the delayed response (clearly I don’t check my blog too often).
The aim of Blackle is to remind people of the need to take small steps every day to save energy. I don’t expect the energy savings from Blackle to change the world on their own, but the point of Blackle is that every little bit counts. I hope that the flow on effect from people using Blackle and thinking more about other things they can do to save energy will make a significant difference. To further this flow on effect we have a section on Blackle packed with energy saving tips (www.blackle.com/tips).
CCFL backlit LCD screens are less affected by color because of their constant backlight. However, new monitor technologies such as LED backlit LCDs screens (in Apple computers and many modern monitors), Plasma screens and OLED screens do not have a constant backlight so we will see larger savings with Blackle as these new monitors replace the old CCFL LCDs. While technology is constantly changing the need to take steps to save energy (even small amounts of energy) is constant.
Please let me know if you have any further questions or comments.
Kind regards,
Toby
